For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God (Romans 1:20, NLT).
Paul writes that belief in God is self-evident in creation and that no one has a legitimate reason to disbelieve.
Below are three of my favorite reasons, based on creation, as to why we should believe in God.
Reason # 1: We exist.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).
Something from nothing is an impossibility.
Nobody has been able to demonstrate credible evidence of “ex nihilo” existence (something from nothing) scientifically or philosophically. Some might ask, “Well, who created God?”
The answer is simple — no one!
There is a principle in philosophy of a self-evident starting point. God (outside of nature) is our starting point for the creation of the universe. Atheists have no starting point and thus no possibility for the simple fact that …
We exist!
Reason # 2: The idea of God.
He has planted eternity in the human heart (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
Where did the idea of God originate if there is no God?
Stop right now and think of a color that you have never seen. We can’t. We don’t create original thought. We can take colors and mix them for differing hues but not create a new primary color.
Let me share two thoughts about the idea of God …
First, like thinking of a new color, where did the idea of God come from? If there is no God, then eternity is outside the experience of our thought and thus impossible. Because God has placed eternity in our hearts, we can consider God.
Second, we can imagine God. But if God exists only as an idea, we should be able to think of something greater than God … but we can’t. Just as the idea of God is evidence of the existence of God, our not being able to think of a greater being than God is also evidence of His existence.
To summarize both arguments: We can’t think of a color that we haven’t experienced, but also, we couldn’t think of color at all if color didn’t already exist.
This above argument for the existence of God always makes me want a Starbucks® Venti Italian Roast with light cream.
Reason #3: We can love!
God is love (1 John 4:8).
Love requires a sentient life (self-awareness). How did something become nothing, and then this “nothing” become aware of itself? You must be self-aware to say, “I love you” to someone else.
I love, and we can all love because God is love. Every atheist who says to someone, “I love you,” is proving the existence of God!
That’s it, three reasons why we can believe in God with confidence. Life as we know it doesn’t make sense without God. As the Psalmist writes …
Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God” (Psalm 14:1).
