Recently, I browsed my NASB Bible (New American Standard Bible) that I read for daily devotions, looking for powerful verses/passages — to raise my self-image, increase my confidence in God, and release me from discouragement.
I recognize that all of us have verses that impact our lives, but I wanted to increase the “power” in your lives with the verses I consider to have the most power in the Old Testament.
All of the following verses are from the NASB (except one), the version of the Bible that I have read since 1972.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).
Hear, Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength (Deuteronomy 6:4-5).
Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified nor dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9).
And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10b, ESV).
For if you keep silent at this time, liberation and rescue will arise for the Jews from another place, and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this? (Esther 4:14, NASB).
Though He slay me, I will hope in Him (Job 13:15a).
The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom should I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; Whom should I dread? (Psalm 27:1)
How precious also are Your thoughts for me, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with You (Psalm 139:17-18).
Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8)
Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary (Jeremiah 40:31).
He has told you, mortal one, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8)
For those of you who pay attention to details, you may have noticed that I included 11 and not ten power verses. Sorry, but I couldn’t get the list down to ten! If you have meaningful and powerful verses that I left off this list, please send them to me. And in the future, I will write an Interruptions entitled. . .
The Other Ten/Eleven Most Powerful Verses in the Old Testament!
