All science, philosophy, technology, in fact, everything can be summed in one word. The most sophisticated word in the Bible and in history.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it (John 1:1-5).
In the original Greek language of the New Testament, the word “logos” is translated as “word.” The most important word in all creation, redundant to say, is “word.”
Logos!
How does the Apostle John describe Logos?
Logos was in the beginning. While I might say, “I remember when my children were born,” Jesus could say, “I remember when everything was created.”
Logos was with God and was God. The most important question of philosophy is answering the conundrum of “the one and the many.” There are many issues today but what does it all mean? All the suffering; is there a plan? The Logos (the “one”) and the Trinity (the “many” of Father, Son, and Spirit) reveal “oneness in many” undergirding the specifics of history with an eternal purpose.
Wow, that’s complicated. Take a few minutes to breathe deeply, re-read it a few times, think good thoughts, and now you are ready to continue reading.
All things were created by the Logos. Every intricacy! In the beginning, the Word speaks and everything exists. Modern science, after fumbling with a stable-state universe, now concludes nothing and then there was something.
In the Logos was life and light. The answer to death and confusion. We may not understand why something happened, but the purpose will be revealed in eternity. No other word – no “logos” in another religion, no political statement or philosophy gives this hope.
The Logos shines in the darkness, and the darkness doesn’t understand it – foreshadowing His crucifixion and our commission to continue as light. This passage indicates struggle along with hope for the return of Logos.
Do you agree? The most complicated and sophisticated Logos (Word) in history? At least we agree that this Interruption might be the most confusing in history.
The Apostle John was about 90 years old when he wrote the Gospel of John. Much of the historical material contained in Matthew, Mark, and Luke can’t be found in the Gospel of John.
Some critics claim John was forgetful. A forgetful John could not have written this introduction explaining history’s most sophisticated Word of philosophy and theology.
John recognized that disciples in the first century already had three Gospel narratives of history. So he wrote about eternal perspective.
Read the following passages as John (the Master of Theology and intriguing soliloquy) explains the truth and purpose of Logos:
Truly, I say to you that you must be born again (v. 3:3).
If you continue in my Logos, then you are my disciples and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free (v 8:31).
I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me. (v. 14:6)
Truly, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you (v. 16:23).
The Apostle John concludes his Gospel with:
This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and wrote these things, and we know that my testimony is true!
Fifty years ago, on New Year’s Eve 1971/1972, I agreed with the Apostle John and was born again.
The words that the Logos promised in the Gospel of John and to all of us – I testify with the Apostle John – are true!
