God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets (1 Corinthians 2:10, NLT).
The opposite of deep would be shallow.
In Corinthians, the Apostle Paul explains that the Spirit reveals to us the deep secrets of God – not the shallow or the superficial.
What are the deep secrets of God?
Before we explore the depth of God, let’s first admit that we will never get to the bottom of God. He is unlimited, and the more we search and understand, the more we realize the little we know. If we spend 1000 years learning about God, we know that a billion years of study will only scratch the surface.
Examples . . .
- Understanding the Trinity or how three beings can be one God – that’s deep.
- How God can be in control of everything and yet still give us the ability to make a decision that is of our free will? If you figure this one out, you will win the Nobel Prize for Bible when you get to heaven.
- How does the sacrifice of one man cover the sins of all people? I don’t understand it, but I’m certainly glad it’s true.
- God used men to write the Bible, and yet it is fully inspired by Him. How did that happen?
If the Spirit used me to write Scripture, the verses would contain jokes, stories, and my personal OGV translation. This is probably why He allowed me to be born a couple of thousand years after the New Testament was written!
We live by faith with many mysteries. We know they exist, we can’t explain them, but we trust God’s love.
Our walk with the Lord constantly drives us deeper, not only in knowledge and understanding but also in love. While we can’t fathom all His secrets, we continue to experience, right now, the depth of His love.
Paul prays that you will experience (not completely understand) God’s love . . .
And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully (Ephesians 3:18-19).
Knowledge or mystery and the unfathomable nature of love come together in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
All of us want to experience love, though we can’t truly understand it. Most of us would rather have a loving relationship than read a book explaining love. Realizing that we can’t understand Him, God opts for explaining deep mysteries through love.
When we love God, we know Him more completely.
We see this in relationships. When we’ve had a great time with friends, at the end of the evening, we say, “Great night.” And we go home feeling closer, like we know our friends better and understand them better.
The co-mingling of love and knowledge will continue throughout our walk with God on earth. He calls, we obey, and He reveals. There is a price to depth.
This price to be paid for love to grow and knowledge to mature, unfortunately, is also the reason too many prefer the shallow end of God’s grace.
