Psalms On Saturday ~ Your Sleep Number Psalms

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety (Psalm 4:8, ESV).

A company named Sleep Number™ manufactures mattresses. Their website says, “The best sleep of your life starts with Individualized Sleep Experiences.” They also offer mattresses that can be individually adjusted (even for a couple) according to your personal needs.

My wife and I are looking to purchase a new mattress! She likes a firm mattress, while I enjoy a softer approach — which means purchasing a mattress for one of us leaves the other frustrated.

Fortunately, a Sleep Number™ bed can be adjusted according to our “number” or what works best for each of us.

The Book of Psalms contains many verses about sleep. I’ve studied all of them and found that they are designed for differing life situations. What keeps us awake differs from one sleepless night to another sleepless night.

One night, it might be a stumbling producing guilt; another night, an insult from a co-worker; another night, financial security worries; and on some nights, a literal attack from the evil one.

The key to sleeping well is not only having a Sleep Number™ mattress but also discerning what sleep number verse of the Psalms you need on a specific night before going to bed.

Consider these sleep number verses. Since I’ve used them often, I’m giving you an Old Guy Version (my personal translation) of each.

Sleep Number for People Offending You:  Psalm 4:4

Don’t let anger ruin your sleep; recognize the frustration and silence your heart before you sleep.

Sleep Number for Spiritual Attacks:  Psalm 91:4-5

God, you are my shield and defense; therefore, I’m not going to be afraid of this terror of the night that’s ruining my sleep.

Sleep Number for Committing a Sin:  Psalm 51:1, 4 and 10

Have mercy on me, God. I know that you still love me. I confess my sin. Wipe away the stain of my transgression. Create in me a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Sleep Number When Needing Wisdom:  Psalm 16:7

Bless you Lord, for you instructing me as I sleep. Allow me to sleep and wake up in the morning with your insight and wisdom.

Sleep Number for Anxiety:  Psalm 116:7

Return to rest my soul; the Lord has always been good to me!

How do you sleep at night?

Some sleep like hibernating bears no matter their mattress or circumstances of life. The rest of us toss and turn, wake up at 3 a.m. and, unable to go back to sleep, spend a few hours worrying about everything, only to fall asleep 15 minutes before the alarm clock clammers.

I pray your “sleep number” Psalms will help tonight.
