Psalms On Saturday ~ Psalm 59

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Rescue me from my enemies, O God. Protect me from those who have come to destroy me (Psalm 59:1, NLT).

Let’s read Psalm 59 when we are surrounded by our enemies. It teaches us the right reaction when others plot to defame, demean, and destroy our lives, reputations, and ministries.

David makes two proclamations of trusting the Lord during an assault on his life.

You are my strength; I wait for you to rescue me, for you, O God, are my fortress (v. 9).

O my Strength, to you I sing praises, for you, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love (v. 17).

God is our strength; we should proclaim this often.

In 1 Samuel 19:11-18, we find King Saul having determined to kill David in his bed at night. David’s wife, Michal, placed an idol in his bed and then helped David escape through a window.

As David describes the event. . .

Rescue me from these criminals; save me from these murderers. They have set an ambush for me. Fierce enemies are out there waiting, Lord, though I have not sinned or offended them (vv. 2-3).

Perhaps there won’t be an attempt on our lives, but we will experience others determined to steal and destroy. Instead of actual knives, they use rumors, lies, and inaccurate statements, but their intention is just as malevolent.

When we discover these plots, and often it’s seemingly too late, we cry out like David. . .

I have done nothing wrong, yet they prepare to attack me. Wake up! See what is happening and help me! (v. 4)

During our deepest trials, when defeat seems imminent, let’s remember what David says. . .

In his unfailing love, my God will stand with me. He will let me look down in triumph on all my enemies (v. 10).

As we read Psalm 59, let’s notice a twist: David doesn’t call for the immediate destruction of his enemies; instead, he requests a three-step process of God’s judgment.

First:  Bring them to their knees in repentance.

Don’t kill them, for my people soon forget such lessons; stagger them with your power, and bring them to their knees, O Lord our shield (v. 11).

Second:  If there is no repentance, allow their actions to ensnare them.

Because of the sinful things they say, because of the evil that is on their lips,
let them be captured by their pride, their curses, and their lies (v. 12).

Third:  And finally, if there is no turning in his enemies’ intentions—then destruction.

Destroy them in your anger! Wipe them out completely! Then the whole world will know that God reigns in Israel (v. 13).

When I’m confronted with those who oppose me, I often want God to immediately go to step three! How about you? But as we live under New Testament grace, we should pray for our opposition to admit the truth of their intentions.

Instead of vengeance, let’s follow David’s advice. . .

But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress (v. 16).

Amen. Peace out!
