There are two fascinating topics in Psalm 29 — the glory and the voice of God!
Honor the Lord for His glory and strength (v. 1).
The voice of the Lord is powerful (v. 4).
Christians speak of God’s glory, and worshippers shout, “Glory!” We also listen to Bible teaching about hearing the voice of God.
We all want to proclaim the glory of God and hear His voice.
Psalm 29 connects glory and voice. But to be honest, the voice of God speaking from His glory is frightening . . .
The voice of the Lord echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders (v. 3).
When I read this Psalm, I pause, realizing that I can’t play games with God. His glory is absolute holiness, and His voice speaks truth. There is a law to the glory and voice of God – nothing can resist glory, and His voice of truth can’t be twisted.
Let’s consider gravity. We can’t jump off a building and think we will fly, nor can we deny its existence. We are going to fall!
The voice of the Lord splits the mighty cedars; the Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon (v. 5).
Time is interesting. Unlike gravity, which is very much a part of our lives as a law that can’t be broken, on earth, the glory of God can be smeared with blasphemes, and the voice of God ignored.
Well, at least until Jesus returns.
Then eternity engulfs time, and this little bit of rebellion called human history in the midst of eternity will be confronted by the full glory and the powerful voice of God.
The voice of the Lord strikes with bolts of lightning (v. 7).
God allows our sin because, through His mercy, He wants us to rule with Him in eternity. By realizing our captivity to our fallen nature, we will worship Him for all eternity when we are set free.
The voice of the Lord twists mighty oaks and strips the forests bare. In his Temple everyone shouts, “Glory!” (v. 9).
On Judgment Day, no one will deny God’s voice or refuse to listen to His voice. We can’t because the glory and voice of God in heaven will be more self-evident than gravity on earth. Denial of God’s holiness will be impossible.
This brings us to a sobering thought.
All the agnostics, mockers, perverted, and prideful will see the glory of God and hear His voice. And they all will praise His name — they must. Just like gravity on earth, in heaven, both glory and voice will be inviolate.
To their doom — as mercy is given only to those who had faith on earth.
The Lord reigns as king forever. The Lord gives his people strength. The Lord blesses them with peace (vv. 10-11).
Amen. Come quickly, Jesus. I want to see God’s glory and hear His voice. We all do!
