Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth (v. 8, NLT).
Psalm 124 is about sudden attacks from our adversaries.
Satan — and other enemies — do not give advance warning of attacks. We are challenged by the Bible to practice Ephesians 6:18 . . .
Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.
We are unaware of where the next attack will be, but we do know that it will come. What makes us vulnerable is not our strong defense. As Psalm 124 says, “Our help is from the Lord.”
Our vulnerability comes by not being prepared — by becoming complacent.
After the recent attack on Israel by Hamas, the entire world asked this question, “How could this have happened to the Israeli security services?”
They are the best in the world.
A phrase that I’ve been hearing about this attack is “failure of imagination” — nobody imagined that the lowly adversaries of Israel would use drones, powered gliders fitted with machine guns, and brazen bulldozers plowing through fences.
Fortunately, God never sleeps!
If it had not been the Lord who was on our side – let Israel now say – if it had not been the Lord who was on our side when people rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us (vv. 1-3, ESV).
We know evil has imagination. We read this warning in Scripture . . .
They encourage each other to do evil and plan how to set their traps in secret. Who will ever notice?” they ask. As they plot their crimes, they say, “We have devised the perfect plan!” (Psalm 64:5-6, NLT).
The righteous can be caught unaware and shocked at the diabolic creativity of evil. New depths of perversity and challenges to God are constantly flooding our world and culture. Fortunately, Psalm 124 explains that without God’s help . . .
The waters would have engulfed us; a torrent would have overwhelmed us. Yes, the raging waters of their fury would have overwhelmed our very lives (vv. 4-5).
Our enemies are many. They constantly look for vulnerability. I have heard these statements many times, “I didn’t see that coming,” or “I never thought that I would fall into that trap,” or “I wasn’t expecting this.”
The Apostle writes in 1 Peter 5:8 . . .
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
But Psalm 124 gives hope . . .
Blessed be the Lord, who has not given us as prey to their teeth! (v. 6, ESV)
Yes, evil rises as a flood, and our enemies attack like wild beasts, but remember . . .
Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth (v. 8, NLT).
Let’s stand guard with our prayers for Israel, for those we love, and for the church to reap a harvest from a mighty revival in the last days. Let’s pray for the flood to be one of the Spirit of God.
