I’m Not a Fool, or Am I?

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of mankind. And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not grasp it.  John 1:1-5

In the beginning there was nothing. Nothing became something. That something included time, space, matter, energy, and probably things not discovered yet.

Then the nothing that became something became living. A chemical reaction, a cell is formed, the cell reproduces to what can be considered life – two cells connected.

Billions of years later, a tadpole crawls out of the sea and decides to start walking and breathing oxygen.

Very, very convenient that the earth that came from nothing, had oxygen ready for the tadpole when it decided to crawl out of the sea.

Add a few more billion years and we have thousands if not millions of flora and fauna, living, breathing creatures, some capable of flying across continents to exact spots one season to the next, others with articulated hands using thousands of differing motions.

And one species with a brain (unfortunately, often not used well).

Amazing!

Then a creature, not sure which one, so we will call it “Mr. Missing Link,” starts thinking. Not instinct but rational thought. Even awareness of thought.

As Descartes so brilliantly said, “I think, therefore I am!” After billions of years, what subtleties the brain can conclude!

First one cell, then before long, millions of creatures with trillions of cells working together (the human body has 37 trillion). First one thought, then trillions of thoughts – fire utilized, wheels, iron, steel, ships, buildings, computers, iPhones and Facebook.

Once thoughts are thought, and those thinking realize they are thinking, “Explanations must be found.” Why do we think? Where do we come from?

A naturalist, who evidently had a few more trillion brain cells than you or me, answered these questions in a book entitled “On the Origin of the Species”. In his writings he explained everything:

I have called this principle, by which each slight variation, if useful, is preserved, by the term of Natural Selection. – Chuck Darwin

Natural Selection, before “useful” was defined or known, existed in the beginning as God. With great wisdom, the correct slight variations were accepted, and those unacceptable were thrown into the black holes of the universe.

There you have it: a cell to trillions of cells, one amoeba to millions of creatures, no thought to cognizant recognition, culture, technology, Bill Gates – and science capable of saying it all comes from nothing.

Let us all bow down and worship Nature! Hallelujah.

Those who disagree, thinking a better explanation would be “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” are ridiculed.

We aren’t scientific; we don’t have the additional trillion brains cells like Carl Sagan:

Let me tell you a story about the beginning. Some 15 billion years ago our universe begins, the mightiest explosion of all time… but deep in the stellar furnaces nuclear fusion was creating the heavier atoms… carbon, oxygen, silicon, and iron. These elements… were the raw materials from which planets and life would later arrive.

Hmmmmhhhhmmm. You must be smart to believe something from nothing plus billions of years (and time didn’t even exist at the beginning) – energy, matter, time – all from nothing!…

…to you!

And today, Pastor Grant writes, not believing a molecule of it. However, I do believe cognizant thought capable of foolishness.

The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” Psalm 14:1
