Five Reasons Why I’ll Read the Bible in 2024

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

You must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God (2 Peter 1:20-21, NLT).

Only supernatural inspiration can account for the origin, reliability, and content of the Bible. No other book comes close.

It’s why I’ve the Bible almost every day since New Year’s Day, 1972, and why I will continue to read the Bible in 2024.

Let me explain a few miracles of the Bible.

One:  The Bible is scientific.

For centuries, science contended the universe was a stable state — or always existing. Around 1930, scientists, considering the new Theory of General Relativity, began postulating a “Big Bang” idea of sudden origination.

Genesis 1:1, stating that God created the heavens and the earth, was written about 1,500 B.C. or almost 2,500 years before science finally figured it out.

Two:  The Bible is reliable.

There are 5,800 ancient Greek manuscripts for the New Testament, reaching back almost to the first century. The most famous person from the ancient world other than Jesus is Julius Caesar. There are only 75 manuscripts that mention him, and the earliest is dated 900 A.D.

Of the 5,800 manuscripts, only a half page of the New Testament is contested as problematic. That’s right, 5,800 manuscripts written over several centuries, and they all agree.

Three:  The Bible is historical.

What is the most attested historical fact in ancient history? Is it Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar’s assassination by Brutus and his friends, or Plato writing his book, The Republic?

None of the above are even close.

The most historic fact is the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus!

Four:  The Bible is philosophical.

Philosophy studies the fundamental issues of life. Three of the main questions asked are:  What is truth? How do we find meaning? and Is there eternity?

Jesus answered all three questions with one statement in John 14:6 when He said, “I am the way [meaning], the truth, and the life.”

Five:  The Bible is the best literature.

The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15) is probably the best short story ever written. The most eloquent description of love is found in 1 Corinthians 13, and the most popular song of the last century lauds the concept of “Amazing Grace,” taught only in the Bible.

And a significant portion of the New Testament was penned by ignorant fishermen — the book must be supernatural.

Now you know five reasons why I will continue to read the Bible. But let me add one more …

It guides my life daily.
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right (2 Timothy 3:16, NLT).
