Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall (2 Peter 1:10, ESV).
Calling is the purpose of our lives.
Every follower of Jesus has a unique purpose designed and monitored by God through spiritual gifts and ministry opportunities. It’s an individual and narrow path.
Our calling should dictate our career, job, and education. Living according to calling means everything swirls around your purpose in life, as Os Guinness writes in his book The Call. . .
What do I mean by “calling”? For the moment, let me say simply that calling is the truth that God calls us to himself so decisively that everything we are, everything we do, and everything we have is invested with a special devotion and dynamism lived out as a response to his summons and service.
When we find our calling, we find purpose with everything in our lives coming into alignment. There is no greater joy than doing what God created us for.
Through calling, we live in the pocket of God’s will.
I’ve heard people say, “I’m happy. I believe that I was made to do this.” I’ve also heard many say, “I hate to get up in the morning. I have another 15 years before I can retire.”
I’ve spent decades working in my calling. I didn’t find my calling through personality tests or gift assessments. Rather, God led me, as a young believer, into disciplemaking.
That’s my calling. What is your calling?
The Apostle Paul writes. . .
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called (Ephesians 4:1).
Look at your fingertips. They are one of a kind. No one else has your fingerprints. Consider your call. It is one of a kind. No other person has your calling!
The uniqueness of your calling is why Paul encourages you to walk in a manner worthy of this calling. The Greek word for “worthy” is “axis.” Often, when we read Scripture in English, nuance is lost in the translation.
An axis is an imaginary line about which a body rotates. Our calling is like the earth rotating on its axis. It should dictate our career, job, education, money, and those with whom we associate.
Do we know our calling? Many don’t, wandering from job to differing careers, with frustrated relationships, often aimless in life, and easily discouraged.
Finding our calling aligns our faith with God’s will. There is no greater peace. Let’s find and walk in a manner worthy of our calling.
