Discipling Children and Grandchildren

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

These words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children (Deuteronomy 6:6-7a, ESV).

My wife, Barbara, has been discipling our granddaughter.

A few weeks ago, she taught Lila that God wants her to pray and that He will answer specific requests. My wife created an artsy and fun notebook in which she could write her prayers.

A few days later, Lila was sick at home.

Her dad walked into her room to check on her and noticed Lila writing something in her “specific prayers” notebook.

Dad: “Lila, what are you writing?”

Lila: “I’m asking God to keep me from puking!”

HHHHMMMHHM!

I’ve written a book on discipling children and grandchildren entitled Passing the Baton. I based the book upon practices that my wife and I used in developing faith in our own children.

The introduction of the book reads. . .

Everything you need to know to launch an amazing, life-changing discipling relationship with your child.

The Bible teaches that parents and even grandparents should raise children in the ways of the Lord. It’s not the responsibility of a school, church, or videos on YouTube®. Being a good steward of the blessings God has given us begins with our children!

But how do we disciple our child or grandchild?

Back to the quote above — the book has everything you need to know! There are ten chapters with ideas, conversations, activities, and games (in an easy-to-follow format) for an adult to engage in a discipling relationship with a child or grandchild.

Topics are trusting Jesus, developing a loving relationship with Jesus, making good choices, how to pray and read the Bible, the importance of sharing Jesus with others, knowing God’s will, and how to serve with spiritual gifts.

My wife uses this book to disciple Lila.

Barbara picks up Lila from school on Monday and has the Passing the Baton book and all the items needed for a creative and fun application of the lesson on the kitchen table when they arrive at our house after school.

The lesson on prayer is entitled Talking with Your Best Friend. The chapter engages a child in praying to our Father, with the goal of the lesson — Jesus loves talking to your child, and here’s how your child can have great conversations with Him.

Great conversations with God mean teaching a child to ask specific prayers. In this chapter, we read. . .

Most prayers heard at the church and at dinner tables are so general that we wouldn’t notice if God answered them. Think about it. When you ask God to bless you, how will you know if He does?

But when you pray specifically, you’re able to see God work — and know He’s active in our lives.

When we disciple our children and grandchildren, our hope is that they will learn and practice the lessons. With the prayer section, my wife wanted Lila to know God wants her to ask Him about anything, ask specifically, and then write the request.

Yep, Lila learned the lesson! And it was answered, as no “clean-up” in her room was needed that night.

Everyone in the house was thankful!
