There will be silence before You, and praise in Zion, God (v. 1, NASB1995).
What mighty praise, O God, belongs to you in Zion (v. 1, NLT).
Some translations open Psalm 65 with, “There will be silence before you,” while others say, “Mighty praise belongs to you.” The Hebrew word for “silence” is like the word translated as “belongs to you.”
Silence is a part of worship. Praise can begin with a consideration of God’s blessings that burst forth in praise for God’s great works.
Psalms 65, 66, 67, and 68 focus on God’s blessing and grace for us as believers. If you put all four of these Psalms together, it begins with…
There will be silence before You, and praise in Zion (Psalm 65:1, NASB1995).
And ends with…
God, You are awesome from Your sanctuary. The God of Israel Himself gives strength and power to the people. Blessed be God! (Psalm 68:35, NASB1995)
If we want a morning devotional of uplifting, getting out of the doldrums, and improving our attitude, then read Psalms 65 through 68 at one time.
We will learn that God is an awesome God in these Psalms.
By awesome deeds You answer us in righteousness (Psalm 65:5, NASB1995).
Say to God, “How awesome are Your works! (Psalms 66:3a, NASB1995)
The song Awesome God was the number-one worship song performed in churches in the 1980s and 1990s. Richard Mullins wrote this song, and he once said about it…
You know, the thing I like about Awesome God is that it’s one of the worst-written songs that I ever wrote; it’s just poorly crafted.
And yet this song has impacted millions.
Such a simple phrase, “awesome God,” but Mullins put the words in a song that gave a depth of meaning for those hurting and impacted by defeat—with a musicality that worshippers could remember and elevate their pain to praise.
Psalms 65 through 68 do the same with simple complexity that allows us once again to know the goodness of God…
You visit the earth and cause it to overflow (Psalm 65:9).
Come and hear, all who fear God, and I will tell of what He has done for my soul (Psalm 66:16).
May God be gracious to us and bless us, and make his face to shine upon us (Psalm 67:1).
Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden, The God who is our salvation (Psalm 68:19).
Let’s be silent and read Psalms 65 through 68 and then give God the glory He deserves.
Our God is an awesome God.
