Psalms On Saturday ~ Psalm 144

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord! (Psalm 144:15, ESV)

Psalm 144 is a psalm of blessings in life.

I imagine King David was on the roof of his palace one day during his morning devotions, and while looking over Jerusalem, he considered all that God had done for him — from a lowly shepherd boy to the king.

Contemplating the goodness of the Lord toward him and toward all of Israel, David writes . . .

Lord, what is man that you regard him, or the son of man that you think of him? (v. 3, ESV)

When I consider my life — what I was like at eighteen, and what I am today, what I had then, and what I have now. How I was a rebellious youth, and yet, by His grace, God has given me a wonderful wife, three children, and six grandchildren.

I say . . .

Blessed are the people to whom such blessings fall! (v. 15, ESV)

How about you? How has God blessed you? I’ve heard many say something like, “If it wasn’t for God, I would be a miserable mite.” Considering your life now, what would it be like without God?

King David, contemplating his life, said this about God . . .

He is my loving ally and my fortress, my tower of safety, my rescuer. He is my shield, and I take refuge in him (v. 2, NLT).

David lists two benefits of following God — victory and prosperity.

Victory . . .

Reach down from heaven and rescue me; rescue me from deep waters, from the power of my enemies (v. 7, NLT).

I will sing a new song to you, O God! I will sing your praises with a ten-stringed harp. For you grant victory to kings! (vv. 9-10)

Prosperity . . .

May our barns be filled with crops of every kind. May the flocks in our fields multiply by thousands, even tens of thousands (v. 13, NLT).

As I read verse 14, it reminded me of the current events in Israel.

May there be no enemy breaking through our walls, no going into captivity, no cries of alarm in our town squares (v. 14, NLT).

Psalm 144, written by David, who lived about three thousand years ago, didn’t pen a psalm promising no difficulties in life, but He does testify about an ever-present God.

Because of the Living God, both in the time of David and right now, those who seek God can have confidence when they cry out . . .

Save me! Rescue me from the power of my enemies (v. 11, NLT).

Read Psalm 144 over and over when you feel threatened or defeated. Our God is a God of victory and prosperity.

Amen. Peace out!
